Department of Transportation Seeks Backup to GPS
WAXAHACHIE, Texas – In May 2019, the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) issued a Request for Information (RFI) on emerging Positioning, Navigation, and Timing (PNT) demonstration capabilities. The DOT RFI follows the National Timing Resilience and Security Act (NTRSA), passed in response to the 2013Presidential Policy Directive on Critical Infrastructure Security and Resilience. This directive designates 16 critical infrastructure (CI) sectors “…whose assets, systems, and networks, whether physical or virtual, are considered so vital to the United States that their incapacitation or destruction would have a debilitating effect on security, national economic security, national public health or safety, or any combination thereof”.In an effort to avoid such a critical failure, the NTRSA mandates the establishment of a land-based, reliable and resilient complement to and backup for the timing component of GPS.
“The current satellite-based GPS system continues to serve the world well, but with the growing sophistication of our nation’s enemies, we can no longer afford to keep all our eggs in that basket,” said Viziv’s VP of Government Affairs Rick May. More than 20 companies replied to the RFI, representing a variety of PNT-related technologies. Four companies, including Viziv, stood out as players with 100 kHz signaling capabilities, as defined by the requirements in the NTRSA. Viziv currently holds license grants from the FCC at multiple frequencies, including the operating frequency of 100 kHz for timing and positioning demonstrations, and has in operation several ZSW signal transmission systems. The company’s objective would be to showcase the significant technical and economic advantages of its proprietary surface wave technology over traditional Hertzian radiated-wave systems.
